In this day and age, it's becoming increasingly difficult to get in shape because we're constantly surround by temptations, money-making schemes, advertisements, and negative influences at home, on our way to work, and by people we come into contact with.
When it comes to achieving a successful body transformation, there are two fundamental factors that I teach clients to keep in their minds. These factors have the potential to influence decision making on a day to day basis and can often make or break your willpower and self-control.
1. Environment
Is the environment that you're in conducive to change? By that I mean is it making it easy to succeed or is it making your life hard?
Do you work in an environment that's surrounded by food and temptations or is your workplace culture big on healthy eating?
Is there a corporate deal for your local gym?
Is your home a mess? A messy house is a messy mind.
Are you stocking your fridge and cupboard with healthy nutrias foods or are they full of junk food?
Do you even know how to cook?
Does your current gym inspire you to achieve the best that you can?
You need to remember that you spend the majority of your life in these places, some more than others, so if you're not picky of where you spend your time you will find yourself battling every day to make the right choices.
2. Enrolment
Are the people you surround yourself with supportive or are they holding you back?
"You're a product of your environment."
Are your colleagues, friends, and family inspired themselves or are they just ticking along every day?
Are they all out of shape?
Do people hold you accountable to perform better at work or at home? i.e, does your partner expect you to 'earn the bread'?
Do people talk more positively to you about your goals or do they criticise, humiliate or try to talk you out of things?
Do your colleagues bring junk food into the office i.e Pizza Friday?
Do your friends or your partner say things like "Don't lose too much weight", "Don't be boring, have just one", or "You don't need to waste money, just do it yourself."
If your colleagues, family and social circle are all uninspired, under-achieving, out of shape, and generally narrow-minded, it's only a matter of time before you join them.
'You're the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn
My Suggestion
Take a look at each environment, who you've enrolled into each, and there are 2 things you can do for each:
Change it (or remove it)
Deal with it
Some environments you can easily change such as your home (clean it, tidy it, re-stock your cupboards and refrigerator, and make improvements that make you feel happy). You can even change gyms to re-inspire you.
Other environments can't be changed that easily such as where you work and who you work for so unless you're prepared to leave your job and work elsewhere, you may have to deal with it. If that's the case, there are certain things that can be controlled such as who in that environment you spend time with or who you allow in your circle. You have to work with some people but you don't have to allow them to hold you back or try to sabotage your goals.
